The Moments Before

Nine years ago I waited for the moment that would change my life forever.

My hair was twisted onto the top of my head and I was wearing the most beautiful dress I had ever owned. I paced around the basement of the historic theater waiting and ready. It was only minutes until I would walk down the aisle and I couldn't wait.
Moments before walking down the aisle...
In those moments I thought about how sure I was about marrying Andy, how I didn't have even one doubt about marrying him. My feet definitely weren't cold. My nervousness was more in the details: Did I look okay? Did I forget anything? Was my planning sufficient? Would the day go the way we wanted it to? But Andy?...I was sure about him and spending our life together.
Mr. and Mrs!
I thought about how happy I was and what an awesome feeling it was to be getting married. And I pondered what our life would hold. I remember thinking about how we would definitely come upon hard times - as everyone does in life, but that we'd get through it together. Pondering the future, thoughts of job troubles or issues with our health crossed my mind. Never did I consider that something would happen to one of our children.

Nine years later, remembering those thoughts in the last moments of my single life, I'm filled with joy and sadness. We didn't know what our future held and it's different than I'd imagined. Harder, yes, but also more wonderful too.

The last nine years with Andy by my side have been amazing. When I think back to our wedding, I smile. It will always be one of my favorite days ever. We had so much fun!
And when I think ahead, I smile. There is so much of our story yet to be written. So many fun times still ahead.
Us on the Fourth of July
Happy anniversary to my Andy. You are the best husband to me and father to our boys. I am one blessed gal to be your Mrs.

It's fun to look back, but looking ahead is even better.

Do you...

Do you have a small child in your house?
Do you try to figure out how to keep said child busy and their mind stimulated? Do you grab your camera when you find them in 'trouble'?
Do you wonder where your days have gone?
Do you ever think it's difficult to get things accomplished?
Yeah, me neither. ;)

Ordinary Days

Last night was a bit rough. Elijah was up every 30 minutes, sneezing and coughing. Eventually, at about 3 am I decided to bring him into bed with us. Normally, being in mom and dad's bed is too thrilling for Elijah. He'll look at the alarm clock, his monitor, or anything that emits light and laugh. Laughing isn't really conducive to sleeping. We learned long ago that sleeping with us just didn't work and we stopped bringing him in our room. A blessing, perhaps, to have our bed to ourselves. But last night was different. Elijah snuggled in laying on top of me (just like he used to when he was a baby), wiped his slime all over me, and went to sleep. He slept until the morning and we did too.

Whenever Elijah gets all snugly, I get nostalgic. I remember in these moments that this will all be over soon. Elijah will only be this little once. Someday soon he'll be too big to lay on top of me in our bed. He'll be too big for me to cradle in my arms. He'll be too big to pick up and rock. He's already getting too big.

Perhaps this is a lesson that has come slower to me than most parents because Elijah achieves milestones later than his neuro-typical peers. Sometimes it seems like we'll be stuck in a developmental stage forever. And then everything changes and I realize that soon he'll be a full-fledged boy, and teenager, and then adult. It'll be here sooner than I realize. I'd better soak it up, take it all in, and enjoy every single moment. Milestones or not, Elijah will get older. Things will change.

Elijah's babyness is pretty much gone. He's a toddler, a little boy - there really isn't much baby left in him. And I wish I'd have enjoyed the baby-Elijah more instead of worrying so much (something I hear a lot of other special needs parents say too). But what I can do is to enjoy him NOW - exactly as he is. I can enjoy each and every ordinary day we have. Because I'm sure my parents look at me, their youngest, and think "Where did the time go?" (Thanks for everything mom and dad!).

Ellen shared the following video on her blog and I wanted to share it here too. It's author Katrina Kenison reading from her book The Gift of an Ordinary Day (now I want to read it!). No, it's not about special needs and some of the things the author says won't be relatable to all parents. But I think the lesson is the same...to enjoy every single moment. Milestones or inchstones, childhood is gone before we know it. We'd better enjoy every moment.

If you're a parent you'd better grab your tissues, because I can pretty much guarantee that your eyes will leak.

I'm going to enjoy this ordinary therapy-free day at home with our snotty-nose boy. I hope you have an ordinary day too.

One of Those Days

Have you ever had one of those days? You know what I'm talking about, one of those days - where nothing seems to go right?

Well, I'm having one.

Every night, Elijah has been waking up and has been staying awake for one to two hours. Last night was no exception and Elijah "visited" with me between four am and five am. We were both up for good at 7:30 (which used to be his normal wake up time). Oh yeah, and since Elijah didn't go to sleep until 9:30 last night, I stayed up late in order to have a couple hours where my name is Lisa instead of mom. I need that.

Needless to say, I was tired this morning. And grumpy. I started to slowly make Elijah his breakfast, carefully measuring out his supplements that we put in his food. With one more item to place in his bowl, I opened the cupboard and a coffee mug fell out and landed on top of the bowl. CRUNCH. You've got to be kidding me. The bowl broke, Elijah's breakfast compromised with glass pieces.

Quickly, while Elijah was in the other room, I grabbed the broom to sweep up any glass pieces, rushed around to clean up, and started the breakfast process all over again.

And then, OUCH. You've got to be kidding me. I picked up my right foot to pull out a piece of glass that had fallen far from the scene of the crime. Apparently, I hadn't done a good job sweeping. Now fearing for the safety of Elijah's feet, I grabbed him and placed him in the laundry room. Blood droplets marked my passage like bread crumbs, showing where I had been. I'm so glad that I washed the floor last night.

Bandage the foot. Wipe up the blood. Make sure all the glass is definitely gone. Let Elijah out. Remake breakfast- executive decision...no supplements this time. 45 minutes until we have to leave for therapy. Feed Elijah. Feed myself - do I have time? Get Elijah dressed. Get myself dressed. Put on some make-up? DRINK SOME COFFEE.

We made it to therapy - five minutes late, but we made it and Elijah was a rock star.

Elijah is napping now. I checked on him shortly after he fell asleep. His room is smelly. I'm not going to wake him up to change him. I know he wouldn't fall back asleep. So, it's a toss up between chancing a diaper rash and a grumpy tired toddler. The decision was easy. I'm not supermom. I wish I was, but I'm not. It's just been one of those days. Please tell me I'm not the only one. Okay, so I admit it's all kind of funny. I need a laugh today - share some of your misadventures with me!

Did You Know It's Already Been

a week since Thanksgiving?

Does anyone else sometimes feel like life is passing by in fast forward? My weeks seem exceptionally long and yet they pass in the blink of an eye. Am I the only one?

At times, I feel so overwhelmed by life. Is it just me? I mean, there's always so much to be done, so much I'd like to do doing. So much therapy, teaching, hoping to do for Elijah. There's always something to do, from housework to therapy, to writing emails (I'm so behind) to updating this blog (which I love to do). Where is the time to just be, to just sit and read and be together without thoughts of what needs to be done?

Thanksgiving gave us a chance to do just that: relax, to read, to sit with family and talk and do...nothing. I like nothing sometimes. I took a several day break from the Internet. Sometimes it's nice to get away. With that said, I'm thankful for this crazy life of ours. I'm thankful for family and friends who've been so helpful and supportive over the past two years. I'm thankful for people who cheer Elijah on, who watch him with a smile on their faces. I'm thankful for people who see the miracles when they see our son. I'm thankful for acceptance and for hope. I'm thankful for my bloggy friends.

I write Elijahland posts in my head often. I wish I'd get them on "paper" more often, because I'd intended to write a post about how thankful I was for Thanksgiving...and a week has already passed me by. Can someone tell me where the slow-mo button is? I can't seem to find it.
