One of Those Days

Have you ever had one of those days? You know what I'm talking about, one of those days - where nothing seems to go right?

Well, I'm having one.

Every night, Elijah has been waking up and has been staying awake for one to two hours. Last night was no exception and Elijah "visited" with me between four am and five am. We were both up for good at 7:30 (which used to be his normal wake up time). Oh yeah, and since Elijah didn't go to sleep until 9:30 last night, I stayed up late in order to have a couple hours where my name is Lisa instead of mom. I need that.

Needless to say, I was tired this morning. And grumpy. I started to slowly make Elijah his breakfast, carefully measuring out his supplements that we put in his food. With one more item to place in his bowl, I opened the cupboard and a coffee mug fell out and landed on top of the bowl. CRUNCH. You've got to be kidding me. The bowl broke, Elijah's breakfast compromised with glass pieces.

Quickly, while Elijah was in the other room, I grabbed the broom to sweep up any glass pieces, rushed around to clean up, and started the breakfast process all over again.

And then, OUCH. You've got to be kidding me. I picked up my right foot to pull out a piece of glass that had fallen far from the scene of the crime. Apparently, I hadn't done a good job sweeping. Now fearing for the safety of Elijah's feet, I grabbed him and placed him in the laundry room. Blood droplets marked my passage like bread crumbs, showing where I had been. I'm so glad that I washed the floor last night.

Bandage the foot. Wipe up the blood. Make sure all the glass is definitely gone. Let Elijah out. Remake breakfast- executive decision...no supplements this time. 45 minutes until we have to leave for therapy. Feed Elijah. Feed myself - do I have time? Get Elijah dressed. Get myself dressed. Put on some make-up? DRINK SOME COFFEE.

We made it to therapy - five minutes late, but we made it and Elijah was a rock star.

Elijah is napping now. I checked on him shortly after he fell asleep. His room is smelly. I'm not going to wake him up to change him. I know he wouldn't fall back asleep. So, it's a toss up between chancing a diaper rash and a grumpy tired toddler. The decision was easy. I'm not supermom. I wish I was, but I'm not. It's just been one of those days. Please tell me I'm not the only one. Okay, so I admit it's all kind of funny. I need a laugh today - share some of your misadventures with me!

Oh Lisa, It's ok! You are NOT alone, believe me, honey! It's days like that when everything goes wrong and it's like a domino effect. Maybe tomorrow will bring a good day

Lisa,
Once upon a time your mom had to go to work on a summer's day. School being out, Andy, Dan and Lisa were tackling the long list that your mom left for them to keep them busy and out of trouble. This day was Dan's turn to prepare a lunch. His favorite delicacy was green pea soup so that's what he decided to prepare. Low and behold your mom received a phone call from Lisa, crying, "Mom, Dan is going to make green pea soup!!" Mom calmly asked Lisa to put Dan on the phone. "Dan, would you please make something else for your sister since you know she hates green pea soup?" No problem. Alls well that ends well, I say:) I had laughs over that for a long time:). So did all my co-workers. Just a little trip down memory lane. It's good to laugh about these things that happen. You might as well. Love you and Andy and Elijah lots and lots. Mom

I'm not even a mother, and yet I feel your pain. I have those days.. (a lot!). I value that you don't give up and throw in the towel. AND I am astonished you still kept to your plans and didn't cancel your day's activities. Know that I laughed when I read your mom's comment. I LOVE GREEN PEA SOUP! Had I known you hated it, I could have picked on you more. (Or at least had lunch with Dan.) I'll pray for a quick healing on your foot. Keep your head high ~ it's always about what you GET to do, and not HAVE to do, that makes the difference. You get to be the "mom", and you have to be "Lisa". You're a blessing and you could have saved those 5 minutes and go without makeup. You're beautiful inside and out! LuV Ya CuZ! Christina O.

There are definetely days when you wonder why you even get out of bed but then tomorrow when you have a totally different day and Elijah wakes you with a smile you will say, "without those not so good days I would never appreciate the truly good days"!!! Hang in there! You are such an inspiration to many. I still think you should write a book!

Lisa, I agree with Jill. You need to write a book. You continue to amaze me with your writing skills. I too admire your ability to accomplish so much. I can definitely see God's hand in it. Humor keeps you going and a positive attitude. Just think of your time with the girls at the Spa. I know you had to have plenty of encouragement and laughs with them.

I remember a time we had some friends visiting our hobby farm with their two small children. My husband told the youngest to watch out for the cow poop and an instant later, guess where she fell? Yep, she sure was sweet smelling and had to have a bath while visiting. I'm sure it's a trip she'll never forget.

It does get better.

Lisa,

Last Friday we were supposed to go to a friends house for dinner. I was supposed to take the baby and go early, after her afternoon nap was over, to spend some extra time with my friend who was hosting. Low and behold HannahBeth woke up an hour early from her nap (a nap she went to bed 1/2 an hour late for) which means I didn't get my cleaning done without her at my feet. Furiously trying to make it out the door in time, I dunked my head under the bathtub faucet with a little shampoo in the mix, I swept and picked up with her right behind me taking things out and throwing things on the floor. I decided to skip the scrubbing of the bathrooms to save time. I threw some clothes on her, and some on me. Checked for my purse... wallet, check. Phone, check. Keys... keys... keys... no keys. Looking for the keys. 5 angry minutes pass looking for keys. Ah yes! They're in my coat pocket. I hadn't gotten as far as coat yet. Ok. Keys and coat. Pick up the baby, pick up the diaper bag, pick up the extras for a long evening, pick up the keys. Oh - food. HannahBeth is eating too many solids now and so must have backup food in case what is served isn't baby friendly. Put down the baby, put down the diaper bag, put down the purse, put down the extras, put down the keys. Food. Haven't gone shopping in forever... down to... cereal and bananas. Ok. Pack the food. Pick up the... wait, don't forget water. I always forget her water sippy. Ok. NOW pick up everything, head out the *ring, ring* my phone is ringing. It's David saying, "hi honey, I'm 10 minutes from home. Do you need me to pick you up or are you there already? *sigh* No, I'm not there. Yes, just pick me up. lol.

I hope that helps you feel better! :) You're a wonderful mommy and we all have those days.

Lisa,
Have you heard of the book, "Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day". Well, I had one of those on Monday. We got up and our dog was acting very mopey; we think she is seriously sick. Then I had to work with a cranky co-worker, and this person got crankier as the day went on; then when we got home, I was late in making dinner. My daughter was trying to print some papers for school, and the printer decided to stop working. Then my husband noticed that the water softner was full of water--it is only supposed to have a small amount of water in it. I am the "fix-it" person in our house, so the printer and softner were jobs I would have to look at. I had promised the day before to call an office supply store because a friend staying with us was having trouble placing an order online; so here was another item to put on my "to-do" list. It was a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. Fortunately, by now, 3 days later, the office supply order has been shipped, the printer is fixed, and the water softner is now fixed. Those days come, and they are horrible, but they also go away. I feel for you. Keep your chin up and "have another cup of coffee!!"

You are NOT alone. Love those executive decisions - make me feel like I have some control (when, really, do I? Not.) Hope your foot heals fast. Whenever glass shatters here - we make a mad dash to put the dog out and get some shoes on. I ALWAYS find stray glass later.

Lisa,

Darlene and I are only six months into this parenthood thing, and we feel ya'. It's all good, but I finally know what it is to be tired. I thought I knew, but whenever you think you know something I guess you have the opportunity to discover new elements that were yet to be uncovered. There’s something deep in there I think. Yeah, sleep deprivation has new and exciting depths indeed. :)

Hang in there!

Thank you so much for your comments, stories, encouragement and love everybody! You seriously made me chuckle, laugh, cry, smile, want to write a book, and lifted my spirits. That takes talent to do all those things, so thanks! Love to all of you!

Oh, and Dan, I think Christina wants to eat some pea soup with you, so you guys should arrange that. Ha! Please don't invite me. ;)
